Welcome to Third Goderich Wolf Cub Pack

3rd Goderich Wolf Cub Pack
Letter to Parents
September 10, 2007

In this issue:
Welcome back to all of you who are returning for another great year in our Wolf Cub Pack! And for those of you who are joining us for the first time at the 3rd Goderich Cub Pack, welcome! Within this welcoming newsletter, you will find important information with regards to how our Pack operates, what is expected of you as Wolf Cubs, and info on our weekend event schedule for this year… including our first day trip & Fall camp! So take a look and read carefully. If you have any questions, or comments, don’t hesitate to ask any of your leaders!

1. Pack information & welcome notes.
2. Transportation Policy.
3. Calendar of Events.
4. Point Clark Lighthouse.
5. Investing New Cubs.
6. Corn Maze.
7. Fall Cub Camp.
8. Parent Help / Leadership opportunities.
9. Fundraising.

1.1 Our Pack now has a Blog. On it, you will find photos & write-ups about our various events. You will also be able to find all correspondence to parents & youth, including any last minute details, so pleas check regularly! It’s at: 3rdGoderichScouts@blogger.com
1.2 Cub meetings on Monday evenings. They will start at 1900 hours (700 PM), and will run to 2030 hours (830 PM).
1.3 From time to time, all or part of a Monday night meeting will be spent OUTSIDE the church. It is important that each Cub arrives DRESSED FOR THE WEATHER and be prepared to be out in the elements. The leaders will not always phone a reminder to the Cubs about this. Any Cub not dressed for the weather will remain inside and miss the activity.
1.4 Scouts Canada is a uniformed organization. As such, FULL UNIFORM must be worn to all meetings and to other events (camps, public events, etc.). Full uniform includes: Scout shirt, group necker, sash, blue pants, gym shoes (when at the church) and your Wolf Cub Handbook.
1.5 A Cub may earn as many badges as s/he wants (and we encourage you to earn lots of them!). We will give them to you when you can tell us what badge you’ve earned & have all previous badges received sewn onto your sash or uniform shirt.
2. Transportation Policy: Scouts Canada has decided that the transportation of the youth to and from all events is their parents/guardians responsibility. What this means here at Third Goderich is that unless the group is coordinating bulk transportation as part of an event (i.e. school bus), then parents are responsible to make sure their youth have a ride to and from each Cub activity, including camps. Certain options are open to you, such as contacting other parents and arranging car-pooling opportunities. A Pack phone list will be drawn up and sent home with your youth by the third Pack meeting to assist in this regard.
3. Calendar of Events: Here at Third Goderich we have been planning forward into he future to ensure some cool, exciting and educational opportunities for all members of our group. In an effort to ensure that you are aware of the when and where of these events, we have decided to give you a list of these events well in advance. Please take a look at the attached calendar for dates, locations. For some of the events, further information can be found below.
4. Point Clark Lighthouse: On Saturday, September 15th, at 1000 hours we will be meeting at the lighthouse for a tour & visit. Bring a bag lunch for after the tour. Parents and siblings are welcome to join us for this trip. See attachments for directions.
5. Investing New Cubs: We plan to invest all our Beavers who swam up at the Spring Canoe camp on Monday, September 24. Please try to have your full uniform by then if you can, parents please join us at 2000 hours for the ceremony, and feel free to bring your cameras!
6. Corn Maze: On Saturday, October 13th we will be heading to a corn maze for a fun family day outing. All sections are invited as well as all family members. More details will follow, but like last year, we will have a hot lunch after the maze, so mark this one down on the calendar!
7. Fall Cub Camp: This year our first camp will be held at the Group camp over by Auburn on the weekend of October 26 to 28. Our theme is First Aid & Transportation. Details of cost, packing list & directions will follow closer to the date of the camp.
8. Parent Help / Leadership Opportunities: This year in Cubs we have two leaders and at least 9 youth. Therefore, we need some parents to come alongside and help out at meetings or camps. This will enable the Pack to have great programming and the adult supervision necessary to keep everyone safe. It will also help when for one reason or another a leader cannot make it to a meeting or event. So on Monday’s, we are looking for parents to commit to helping out just one meeting a month. Additionally, during events like our Fall camp, we are looking for someone who is willing to coordinate the kitchen for us. If you’re interested, please let either of us know, thanks!
9. Fundraising: 3rd Goderich does only two fundraising events during the year: the Hot dog booth at the craft show in the summer, and Apple Day. During these two events we raise money for all the activities & camps we go to. This also enables the youth and leaders to focus on great programming throughout the year. As such, we strongly encourage all youth to mark these two events on their calendar and participate in them. Thanks! That being said, when we have the date of Apple Day in October confirmed, we’ll let you know!

Cub Spring Fun Day - Playing With Fire & Water

The date was Saturday, April 28, 2007. The leaders & Cubs were gearing up for an exciting time at the group camp on the shores of the Maitland River. Just this past Monday Cub meeting we had spent time making fire starters. And now, just 6 days later, we were going to get to use them! (in a monitored & safe environment, of course)

As any camp with our leaders, it started off with us going over the rules of engagement - er, the code of conduct & what was expected of us. And then we were split into to sixes & we were off on a scavenger hunt. What was that count down again? Oh yes: As a Six, find
Five leaves from different trees & identify them.
Four insects.
Three animal tracks.
Two nests.
And One DEAD BODY! Hey Bagheera, can it be an insect?

Okay, so now what? Fire? You got my interest! So what do I need first when planning to light a fire.... wood - no; match? No; a place to make it... Oh right, A way to put it out! What are the three things a fire needs... hmmm, something that burns - that's obvious. A match or lighter - oh anything that will make it really hot - heat. Okay. Now the third one. Um. Bigger wood? A second match? Oh yeah, Baloo mentioned this one before - air! Okay, now we got that stuff out of the way, in our teams we're going to lay & light a fire & cook our lunch over it. Cool! I bet our Six will get our fire going faster!

All this fun is making me hungry. Baloo - what's for lunch? Hot dogs & Pepperettes in a blanket of Bannock. Way cool. First, I mix up the bannock batter - kinda like thick pancake batter into a nice dough. Wrap it around a stick & toast it. Then I put a hot dog on the wooden skewer sticking out the end of my toasting stick & cook it. Then I just grad the bannock, pull it up off the stick & grab the hot dog on the way off... and do it again! These are great, & wait until you try it with a pepperette! No mustard or ketchup required for these puppies!

Okay, I'm full. Now what? Make MORE fire starters? Alright! So Bagheera, I take 6 parts dryer lint and 1 part Vaseline, rub it together & make a ball out of it. And then I stick it in this film canister. And repeat. Lather, rinse, repeat. Er, no that was this morning in the shower.
Um, my hands are all sticky. Now what?

Off we go to the river to wash our hands. Yep Baloo, I remember last spring when we got out of the canoes here. When do you think they'll fix the bridge across the river and really make it the GART (Goderich Auburn Radial Trail)? Oh, sorry Bagheera, you were talking about the water cycle. Yeah, I understand. Rain comes down, hot weather makes the water turn to gas and go up & then the cold temperature way up there turns the water vapour into clouds & back into rain.

And now we move on to... more fire! Sure I'll get our campfire going again. And while you leaders get the snack ready, I'll watch Scout Andrew demonstrate other ways to light fires. Andrew - could you show me the thing with the battery & steel wool again? Thanks, that's neat!

Oh yeah! What's going to camp without Smores? Can I toast another marshmallow, please?

I've been trying not to think about the end of the day, but when you start talking about no trace and minimal trace camping I see the writing on the trees. Time to look around & make sure we haven't left anything on the ground we shouldn't have. And into our parent's cars and home we go. Hey, I remember the Winter Fun Day we had out hear a few months ago. THEN we had to walk all the way in from the road and back out again through all that snow. And 'Me' kept falling in the snow on the way out. Now THAT was funny!

Thanks a lot Baloo & Bagheera for a great day!

Spring 2007 Maitland Canoe Trip

Yee Haw!

Now that was fun! As Baloo would say, "That was a real Scouting event - it rained!"
It may have rained Saturday night & while we were on the river on Sunday, but we all had a great time! Let's go back to the beginning...

Friday night, May 25, 2007 saw Cubs, Scouts and leaders trailing in to our camp on the shores of the Mighty Maitland River just south of Auburn. After setting up our tents and setting ground rules, we made a fire, explored a bit and had a night snack. It was going to be a long, but fun day on the river tomorrow, so let's get some sleep, right? Well, the Grouse kept at least one leader up most of the night throbbing not far from our campsite in the cedars. As he finally drifted to sleep, the Bald Eagles started to make their haunting calls keeping me awake... and then a Cub (who shall remain nameless), discovered light and woke the rest of the camp up almost 2 hours early!

The Scouts made us french toast and oatmeal for breakfast - Yum! Good job guys! They made us lunch too! And off we went up north to our put in point on the river. We all launched onto the river, and, although we went a week earlier this year, the water level was down. So we came across a few more boulder gardens than last year... and a few more groundings too! We paddled down to our annual lunch spot, where Jimmy saw a Snapping Turtle! And off we went again. There was a light drizzle, and a nice overcast sky making it a nice temperature to be paddling. Among the many birds flying around, we saw Seagulls, Swallows, a Great Blue Heron, and Ducks.

We made it back to the Camp no worse for wear, but some of us a bit wetter for swamping a canoe or falling in (oh wait - the falling in was before lunch!). Into dry clothes & the Beavers had joined us for the afternoon. Free time for the Cubs & more paddling exercises for the Scouts happened until dinner. During free time Jimmy helped Bagheera practice his lashing and Keegan found a frog. They made a table to improve the kitchen area. And right after dinner we were off to our tents to get into uniform. All sections did their opening for each other (and our parents) to see. We then had all third year youth head up to the next section. A gaggle of Beavers went up top Cubs & a lone wolf left Cubs & headed up to Scouts.

The Beavers headed home, and the rest of us headed back into the cedars for a relaxing campfire before heading to bed. The night past. Dawn broke. The sky lightened. Nothing stirred. Bagheera's alarm went off. Was turned off. Still nothing stirred. Time passed. THEN a Cub saw the light... and let the rest of us know it was time to get up!

So, out of bed, dress & pack up everything including our tents to get ready for the last dash to Ball's Bridge top end our canoe trip. Yeah! french toast & oatmeal for breakfast again! While some leaders went to place vehicles at the end point, the Cubs & Scouts found ways to entertain themselves. They found similarities between the Cub & Scout promises and laws. They also went for a mini hike. Just as we prepared to get on the river, it began to rain. We put into the river around noon, and off we went. Only a couple of walking spots for us heavy leaders and some very nice paddles and swifts for us all to enjoy. I must point out that right after the Scout canoe said, "Hey look at us, we never get stuck on a rock!" - they got stuck on a rock! Nice going guys, and a spectacular grounding too! The rain started getting heavier, but the spirits of the paddlers still high. And then around the corner came the sight we both looked forward to and dreaded - Ball's Bridge. Once again our canoe camp had drawn to a close.

See you all on Sunday, June 3rd, 2007 at 1300 hours (1 pm) for the Grand Opening of the camp's new building!

44th Woodstock International Camp

Hello one & all:

It was a great weekend camp down at Shegardanou Scout Camp near Woodstock! It was great to see all the Scouts gelling and working well as a team.

All us leaders were definitely proud to watch the two patrols team together for the tug-of-war competition. They were involved in two of the longest, toughest competitions of the event. Way to go guys! You did us proud.

Other highlights for the weekend were the activities - fire lighting (with the added bonus of cooking for & feeding your leaders!); table lashing; weaving a mattress of straw; barrel roll; semaphore and more. We had fun at the campfire ("Sarah - Pull yourself together!") and the food was awesome!

You Scouts also did us proud witht he one trip in to our site Friday night & one trip out to the vehicles Sunday using our luggage cart. Didn't it feel great having other Troops & leaders watching us & commenting on what a great idea we had? That cart will sure come in handy at CJ'07 this year when we have farther to trek. And you all worked together as a team to get the cart up the long, steep hill Sunday morning...

Well, see y'aal next time....

Attached are some photos from the camp - Enjoy!
